Cat Got Your Tongue?

Something I found in Sunday's Parade:

What causes the feeling of a lump in your throat when you're emotional?

The sensation occurs when excess activity of the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system causes a certain muscle in the throat to go into spasm. This muscle helps keep the esophagus closed when you're not eating. So, when the muscle misbehaves, you feel you can hardly swallow.

So now I finally know why I feel the way I do.
